Aristeo placed concrete foundations, including formwork, for a new 70,000 square foot basketball arena for Wayne State University. For more than 50 years, Wayne State basketball games were played at the Matthaei Center, which was constructed in 1965. The new arena will more than double the current seating capacity, allowing the growing university to accommodate a variety of games and events.
Aristeo was contracted to place concrete foundations, including formwork, for a new 70,000 square foot basketball arena for Wayne State University. The new arena will include one main basketball court with the capacity to be divided into two and seating for approximately 3,000 fans. The space will also include offices, five main locker rooms, training rooms, concessions and other ancillary spaces.
Throughout the project, Aristeo’s team adapted to new safety requirements after the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. After the jobsite reopened, Aristeo quickly revised the safety plan and procedures to incorporate daily health screenings, mandatory temperature checks, social distancing and increased sanitization of common areas. The success of our safety procedures relating to COVID-19 allowed the project to complete on schedule and with an excellent safety record of zero incidents.
For this project, Aristeo placed more than 2,250 cubic yards of concrete for the footings, foundations and 860 linear feet of 20-foot-tall basement walls. Aristeo also placed more than 40,000 square feet of wall formwork.
The new arena’s basement walls are approximately 20 feet tall – a unique challenge solved through Aristeo’s depth of expertise with concrete services and knowledge of MEVA formwork systems. MEVA is an engineered system that allows for superior concrete finishes while maximizing the amount of concrete poured in one placement. The system is also easily installed with less manpower, thanks to the lightweight panels that allow for more panels per crane pick and composite skins that keep manpower focused on installing the next wall instead of reskinning panels after multiple uses.
