Stellantis awarded the Walbridge-Aristeo Joint Venture (WAJV) the renovation and modernization of two existing engine plants in Detroit to become the city's first new assembly plant in 30 years. After a $1.6 billion investment, the Detroit Assembly Complex-Mack Plant has launched the all-new, three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee L, added 3,850 new jobs, and now has the lowest emissions rate of any auto assembly plant in the United States.

As a brownfield reclamation site with plants originally built for ground-level conveyor engine assembly, there were unique challenges to transitioning this project to a state-of-the-art facility for the Grand Cherokee L, the next generation Jeep Grand Cherokee and electrified models. The work included:

  • Removal of 3.7 miles of flumes and filter galleries using innovative methodologies
  • Adding new pits and foundations for new assembly equipment
  • Modifying 112 trusses and reinforcing 625 trusses to support new equipment
  • Adding new testing, quality, and other infrastructure to plant
  • Updating one million square feet of roofing
  • Replacing the St. Jean roadway with new employee parking areas
  • Expanding the adjacent railway

This extensive project was completed within an aggressive schedule, despite the unexpected closure of the jobsite for four weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to the precise planning, state-of-the-art techniques and equipment, and partnership between Stellantis and WAJV. The teams utilized visual planning, BIM Modeling, Last Planner, and interactive technology. With these tools, they created a critical four-week look-ahead schedule for all subcontractors and the project as a whole. In addition, the WAJV exceeded goals set by the City of Detroit-based subcontractor/supplier sourcing and Detroit resident workforce participation. The project also exceeded diverse business sourcing goals.

Thanks to the combined efforts of WAJV and our subcontractor partners, this 1.3 million work hour project was completed with no lost time injuries and within the accelerated, 19-month timeframe allowing Stellantis to begin equipment and process validation by the end of 2020.
