Aristeo renovated Maizie’s Kitchen & Market for the University of Michigan, which is in one of the most historical and high traffic buildings on campus: Michigan League. The all-new market provides students, faculty, staff and the public with a modern new venue for eating, socializing and studying.

As general contractor on this 14,000 manhour project, Aristeo managed over 20 subcontractors and in-house self perform demolition crews. Aristeo demolished the interior of the existing 5,000 square foot room down to its studs and rebuilt the space to be a modern eatery that seamlessly blended with the historical look and feel of the Michigan League building. This project was completed on budget and with zero recordable incidents all in time for the start of the fall 2018 semester.
Aristeo solved for some unexpected conditions provided by the nearly 100-year-old building, including uneven wall frames that were falling apart, old drywall on the perimeter walls and too little space in the ceiling. Aristeo remained flexible throughout the project, planning additional shifts to reframe the walls, place new drywall and rearrange lighting plans to suit the existing ceiling space.
This project also required careful scheduling to minimize disruption to the Michigan League building, which was an active event and hotel venue throughout the project. Aristeo scheduled construction crews to work overtime or night shifts and tracked the Michigan League’s event and hotel schedule to avoid planning noisy or disruptive activities during events or while hotel guests were sleeping nearby. Michigan League’s event schedule also often changed at the last minute, requiring Aristeo to rearrange construction activities and crews. Maintaining close cooperation with the University of Michigan allowed Aristeo to react quickly, avoid disturbing guests and keep the project on track.
