Aristeo Construction completed the renovation of the University of Michigan's (U-M) new Art & Architecture Building Work Commons area, which provides art students with a collaborative space and instructional studios within the Art & Architecture building. For this eight-month project, Aristeo helped execute an atypical classroom design that called for the interior walls to be built at custom angles from the exterior walls. Aristeo accommodated this design while also fulfilling many other scope requirements.

Project details:

  • Self performed miscellaneous steel fabrication, installation and erection
  • Self performed demolition and concrete services, including installation of colored concrete
  • Executed a trapezoid entrance design built with MDF, metal and glass panels
  • Oversaw construction of uniquely angled walls & doors, as well as custom finishes

The project scope includes doubling a two-story 5,000 square foot space to 11,000 square feet by adding a second floor that included two work commons spaces, two seminar rooms and five studios.

Renovating the older Art & Architecture building presented foundational challenges, including discovery of underground conduit and a concrete vault. This required Aristeo to shift foundation plans and swiftly schedule demolition crews. Despite these challenges, Aristeo still met the short eight-month project schedule while working within a fully occupied building.

The successful completion of this 18,000 manhour venture within budget and with an excellent safety record reflects Aristeo's experience in executing complex projects in a timely fashion.
